Marin, from the bridge to the ocean

My backyard, basically. Everything here is fifteen to forty-five minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge. Weekdays are quieter; the fog doesn't care.

1. The bridge from Battery Spencer

   The postcard view. Go early; the parking is tiny.

   The whole bridge below you. Hawks migrate over it in September.

3. Point Bonita Lighthouse

   Open a few afternoons a week only — check before you go. The little suspension bridge is the best part.

4. Rodeo Beach and the Marine Mammal Center

   Say hi to the sea lion patients. The pebbles are jasper and carnelian.

5. Tennessee Valley to the cove

   3.4 miles round trip, flat, whales some days.

6. Muir Woods, first slot of the morning

   Reservations required. The 8am slot is you and the redwoods.

7. East Peak of Mount Tam

   Drive most of it, walk the last bit. On a clear day, the Farallones.

8. Stinson Beach on a warm day

   Rare. Drop everything when it happens.

9. The ferry back from Sausalito

   The ferry is the tour. Stand at the back.

Missing: the Golden Gate from the water, under sail, on the ebb. Take me out next time I'm over.

Point Bonita's opening hours are the real boss level. Made it on the third try.
