Paris on foot

The famous things, at the right hour and from the right side. All of it walkable, if you're stubborn.

1. The Eiffel Tower sparkling, from Trocadéro

   On the hour after dark, for five minutes. Don't bother going up.

2. Musée d'Orsay's clock window

   Fifth floor. Sacré-Cœur through the clock.

3. The Louvre, first thing

   In by the Carrousel, straight to the Mona Lisa, then get lost somewhere quieter.

4. Sainte-Chapelle on a sunny morning

   The upper chapel is all glass. Clouds ruin it; wait for the sun.

5. Notre-Dame, reopened

   Free. Pale stone, a new roof, the rose windows.

   Sacré-Cœur's steps, Place du Tertre empty, a painter setting up.

7. Ice cream at Berthillon

   Île Saint-Louis. Then walk the islands' quays.

8. Falafel in the Marais

   L'As du Fallafel. Eat it walking, like everyone.

9. A chair in the Luxembourg Gardens

   The green metal ones. Drag one to the pond.
