Rome, the obvious done properly

Everyone goes to the same ten places. Go anyway — just at the right time, and eat better than everyone else.

1. The Colosseum underground

   Book the underground tour, the early slot.

2. The Roman Forum and the Palatine

   Same ticket as the Colosseum. Shade is rare; water isn't — the fountains are drinkable.

3. The Pantheon when it rains

   Rain through the oculus, drains in the floor since 125 AD.

4. Trevi Fountain at seven in the morning

   By nine it's shoulder to shoulder.

5. The Sistine Chapel, first entry

   Book the first slot and walk straight there.

6. Climb the dome of St. Peter's

   551 steps, or the lift for part of it. The view down into the basilica is the best bit.

7. Dinner in Trastevere

   Cacio e pepe, carbonara, amatriciana. Pick one; come back for the others.

8. Supplì from a hole in the wall

   A fried rice ball with mozzarella inside. Pull it apart — that's the telephone cord.

9. Gelato, twice a day

   If the pistachio is bright green, keep walking.
