One. Pen, not pencil. You can't erase, so you stop trying to be right and start trying to be there. Every good drawing I own has a mistake in it that I decided to keep.

Two. Five minutes or fifty, never fifteen. Fifteen is long enough to want it to be good and too short to make it so. Five is a note. Fifty is a conversation.

Three. Draw the people waiting, not the thing they're waiting for. The tram will look like a tram. The woman with the cello case will only ever look like herself, once, this afternoon.

Four. Date every page. Not because you'll forget when — you will — but because in ten years the date will be the only thing that tells you which Lisbon this was.

Five. Show it to the person who owns the house. She'll say 'that's my aunt's.' That's the review. That's the whole review.
